10 Things to Do in Seattle, Lake Union, & Wallingford

Between its rich, storied history and designation as Washington’s answer to Silicon Valley, the city of Seattle and its surrounding enclaves have become some of the most desirable places to live in the nation, if not the world. As one of the five fastest-growing cities, Seattle positively thrives with things to do – so much so you may not know where to start.

Leading real estate agent Shannon Campbell has narrowed it down for you. Read on for her counsel on the greatest activities in the area.

1. Spend an afternoon away at Gasworks Park

Situated on the bucolic, sloping green hills above the ever-enchanting Lake Union, Gasworks Park is a sight. The iconic Seattle landmark stars the remnants of the Seattle Gas Light Company, which once fueled the historic city before it was closed in 1956. Established as a public park in 1975, it’s a huge draw for families with children thanks in part to its enormous Kite Hill (which, forget your aching quads, is an absolute ball to bounce or tumble down). When the weather permits and gifts Seattle with sunshine and clear skies, this is an ideal spot for a leisurely Sunday picnic. Bonus points: With the city skyline in the background, it’s also an optimal place for taking stunning photographs.

2. Splurge on ice cream at the world-famous Molly Moon’s

Located between the University District and Fremont, Wallingford boasts some of the finest cuisines in a city that is already booming with world-class eateries. And while you might not count ice cream as cuisine, per se, Molly Moon’s may make you wonder if anything, savory or sweet, has ever tasted so good. This classic ice cream shop began as a small start-up with its pilot parlor, so to speak, first opening its doors in the Madrona district in 2011. Wallingford gladly welcomed Molly Moon’s creations in 2014. The shop may be relatively small in size, but it is huge in charm and flavor, with options ranging from seasonal flavors like pumpkin clover and salty toffee to “always flavors” such as lavender honey and sweet cream. Homemade and served with flair, a trip to Molly Moon’s elevates the whole concept of “Let’s go out for an ice cream.”

3. Delight in the “Duck Dodge”

Lake Union is perfect for paddleboarders, kayakers, and sailors, rendering any time near the water a mix between tranquility and excitement. Head towards South Lake Union Park the next Tuesday if you have free time to watch the famed “Duck Dodge,” when local sailors with boats both colossal and cozy partake in a community race. Deemed the “ultimate beer can race” by Sailing World magazine, this exuberant regatta epitomizes Seattle’s clever, playful side.

4. Take a jog around Lake Union

Lake Union is perpetually busy – and, as such, addictive to watch. From seaplanes to those Duck Dodges, it’s exhilarating to witness. One of the best ways to savor it is by running the six-mile loop that starts at Westlake Avenue. You’ll take immense pleasure in the clear and invigorating Pacific Northwest air.

5. Explore Seattle’s history at The Center for Wooden Boats

Seattle has long held the title of one of the most significant ports in the world, and the city itself possesses a long, sometimes volatile history. The Center for Wooden Boats, which has two locations on Lake Union, pays tribute to the city’s maritime past. Featuring over 170 water vessels, it operates as both a museum and a center for learning, complete with lessons on taking to the water yourself.

6. Sample craft beers at TangleTown Public House

To know Washington is to recognize and celebrate its wide-ranging assortment of superb, handcrafted brews. TangleTown Public House is just the place to gain an appreciation for the state’s craft brewery scene. Boasting an impressive selection of locally-made beers–from Chuckanut pale ale brewed in Bellingham to piney hops concocted in Coupeville–this trendy watering hole always shows patrons an excellent time. Sop up your hops with bites from their blazing kitchen; the place is famous for its cheese-filled bread boats, or Georgian Khachapuri, which are jam-packed with ingredients like pork fennel sausage, ricotta, and Khachi cheese.

7. Peruse the shelves at Ophelia’s Books

Bookstores abound throughout Seattle, in large part because the drizzly weather creates the perfect backdrop for diving into a story. Ophelia’s Books in the lively Fremont district just north of Lake Union satisfies the escapist in all of us. Featuring a carefully curated selection of used titles in nearly every genre, this is one of those sweet shops where you could easily get lost for hours.

8. Stroll through the MOHAI

The Museum of History and Industry–or MOHAI, as it’s fondly called–goes down as one of Seattle’s most entrancing museums. Artifacts (and facts themselves) about Seattle’s most prominent industries, including Boeing and Rainier Brewing Company, are showcased in the immaculate gallery. Pause at the museum’s periscope–a replica from World War II–to absorb the stunning vistas of Seattle.

9. Kayak past Seattle’s dreamy houseboats

Think of houseboats, and Sleepless in Seattle will likely come to mind. Parts of the classic movie were filmed on Lake Union, which prospers with houseboats that range from picturesque and intimate to sprawling and astonishing. Rent a kayak and ease your way past these clusters to imagine what life would be like bobbing on the beautiful water.

10. Soak up the views from the space needle

What compilation of Seattle’s best activities would be complete without mentioning its globally renowned space needle? The lofty structure, situated in the Queen Anne neighborhood of the city, was constructed for the 1962 world fair – and rivals the Eiffel Tower in terms of iconic landmarks. See how the city appears 520 feet above the ground, and relish the views of the bustling, captivating town.

Intrigued by all that Seattle has to offer? This is just a slice of its long list of enthralling adventures.
